Finance minister says there has been no discussion on where marijuana would be sold once it is legalized Finance Minister Joe Ceci said his remark about pot in Alberta liquor stores was made in jest. (Michelle Bellefontaine/CBC ) Finance Minister Joe Ceci says an offhand comment about selling pot at liquor stores he made to a roomful of rural politicians in Edmonton Wednesday was a poor attempt at humour. Ceci made the comment at the spring meeting of the AAMDC after Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley tackled a question on where the Alberta government stands on the legalization of marijuana. "If all that gets sorted out, and I hope it does, I've got AGLC outlets or liquor stores all over the province that can be your place to go for your pot," Ceci said to laughter from the crowd. The issue immediately took off on Twitter. Afterwards, Ceci told reporters the remark was his attempt at humour and not an indication of where the Alberta government is headed on the issue. There has been no discussion within his department on where marijuana would be sold, if it is legalized by the federal government, he said. "There is no government policy and when the feds make their decision, the Alberta government will make its decision," he said. "My statement out there was an attempt to bring some levity to the situation and make a joke. And I won't leave my day job anytime soon because of the reaction I didn't get." Ceci said the government hasn't done any analysis on potential revenue streams from the sale of legal marijuana. Wednesday isn't the first time a Canadian politician mused about selling legal marijuana in liquor stores. Last fall, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said government-owned LCBO outlets would be the best distribution system for legal marijuana. |
