A semi truck driver who struck a female pedestrian – leaving tire tracks on her lower back – was frantically flagged down by police when he happened to return to the scene of the hit-and-run collision on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the driver had no idea he had run over a woman with the back end of his lengthy tractor trailer unit, sending her to hospital with various soft-tissue and internal injuries. He only came back to the intersection about an hour later because it was his typical route.

Despite visible tire tracks on her body, the victim, believed to be in her 30s, is expected to survive.  She was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in serious, but stable and non life-threatening condition.

Acting Sgt. Dave Dentandt said the incident happened around 12:10 p.m. Thursday when the driver of a semi truck and trailer traveling northbound on Blackfoot Trail, made a right hand turn to go eastbound on 47th Avenue S.E.

When the driver turned his vehicle, the rear end of the trailer struck a curb, and a pedestrian who was waiting by the curb. The driver left the scene and continued on his way to a nearby yard, where he dumped his load, then carried on with his day.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and officers canvassed nearby businesses for CCTV footage of the collision.

Based on video footage and witness descriptions, officials knew they were looking for a distinct red flat-bed truck.

As some officers remained stationed at the scene, others drove around the industrial area looking for a vehicle that matched that description.

That’s when a long red semi drove through the intersection where the collision had occurred.

“We had a good picture of the vehicle that we believed it was. Thankfully for that video, that’s what clued us in when he drove by. We could just tell that was the same vehicle,” Dentandt said.

Officers, including Dentandt, flagged down the semi driver, who was cooperative when confronted by police. Dentandt said it became apparent the driver didn’t realize he had struck a person.

“I stopped him, and talked to him, and figured out where he was coming form, how long he’d been there, the route he had taken to get to that place and we backtracked it and figured out that was the vehicle,” Dentandt said.

“He was surprised. This turn in particular, it’s clear that trailers often drive over the curb. It could have been just a normal occurrence for him. He didn’t realize that he did anything wrong.”

Police said the driver won’t be charged for striking the pedestrian but will be issued offence notices for equipment violations, including straps that don’t comply with regulations, and rock and debris on his trailer.

Dentandt said it’s not every day a vehicle police are looking for shows up so easily.

“It’s great for us. It makes it easy for us,” he said.
