Girl, 8, required to fill out application despite province saying she's entitled to care The lawyer for an eight-year-old Calgary girl being denied medical coverage says the province's claim that it has resolved the issue is "nonsense". Divya Boparai's family received a letter from Alberta Health, saying her coverage would be revoked at the end of the month because her mother's refugee status is unclear. After CBC News reported the story, Alberta's health minister issued a statement on Friday evening acknowledging that the child is in fact entitled to coverage. Immigration lawyer Raj Sharma says the family is in what he calls "legal limbo" because of the "incompetence" of bureaucratic wrangling. (Submitted by Raj Sharma) "In a situation like this, where the daughter is a Canadian citizen living in Alberta, she is entitled to health coverage, so it appears that there has been a misunderstanding," Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said in a statement. "I asked my staff to contact the mother today to clear up the confusion. That has happened through her legal representative, who was walked through the steps this family can take to make sure this child receives coverage under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan," Hoffman added. But the family's lawyer, Raj Sharma, says the mother has been asked to fill out a special application. "It's near offensive to request someone who is entitled to something to make an application for it," Sharma told the CBC. "I don't think the province should be hiding behind this nonsense of misunderstanding. I think it's very clear. This is not the first Canadian-born, Calgary-born child that's been threatened with loss of health care coverage." Sharma says there needs to be a policy change — and he feels the issue will be best settled in court. "Because even if I solve this problem for Divya, what about the next child? And I really don't want to go through this again. I really want to just fix this problem once and for all," Sharma said. 原文:http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-health-amarjeet-boparai-divya-response-1.3287024
