24-year-old with 'that Oscar de la Hoya charm' hasn't lost in 10 professional fights Lukasz Wierzbicki expects to win a world boxing title within three years. (CBC) Calgary-based boxer Lukasz Wierzbicki is taking another step towards his goal of becoming a world champion when he returns to the ring Friday night at the Genesis Centre in Calgary.Wierzbicki, a super lightweight, who moved to Calgary from Poland three years ago, is fighting Jacek Wylezol, also from Poland. If you think Wierzbicki might be tempted to go easy on a countryman, think again. This is business. "Once we step in the ring, we're opponents. He's my opponent, and we're fighters. We're there to fight. We're not there to socialize and talk," Wierzbicki said. "We might be friends after, but when we fight, we fight." The 24-year-old boxer, who works as a roofer during the day, moved to Calgary from Zawidow, Poland to become a professional fighter. Zawidow has a population of less than five thousand, so it's been an adjustment. "I moved by myself. I'm still pretty close to my family, but I don't have them here with me. I have to learn how to deal with it. That was the biggest shock for me," he said. He's adjusted just fine in the boxing ring so far. Wierzbicki is undefeated in 10 fights, and describes his style as an exciting one with plenty of speed and head movement. He expects to win a world championship within three years. So, what can fans expect from a Wierzbicki fight? "Masterpiece of boxing," he said. Future StarWierzbicki's promoter, Michael Short, says he has what it takes to become an international star in boxing."This kid has that Oscar De La Hoya charm," he said. "He's a humble kid, he's a hard working guy. He's got the potential to go all the way." Pro boxing making a comeback in CalgaryShort's promotional company, Dekada, is holding its second show of the year on Friday night. The first, in October, drew close to 1,200 fans.
Promoter Michael Short says boxing is making a comeback in Calgary. (CBC) Short, a former professional boxer himself, says these are the biggest boxing shows in Calgary since 1985, when Olympic silver medalist Willie de Wit fought at the Corrall."Boxing is really making a comeback, a resurrection," he said. Friday's Dekada show also features a fight for the Canadian cruiserweight championship. Ontario's Frank White is defending the title against Edmonton's Rob Nichols. |
