Roger Chaffin will be Calgary's new police chief, if approved by city council on Tuesday, CBC News has learned. The plan is to announce the current deputy chief's promotion in the afternoon, according to sources. Rick Hanson left the post in March of this year and then made a bid for a provincial seat with the PC party. In the meantime, Hanson's former right-hand-man, Supt. Paul Cook has been manning the top job. Chaffin, who is currently in charge of the bureau of organizational support, has been a CPS member since 1986. The announcement is expected after an in-camera council session, mid to late afternoon. Last month, Rod Fong, chair of the Calgary Police Commission sent an e-mail to all CPS staff to address "concerns regarding the process involved in hiring the new Chief and the length of time involved in completing the process." He reassured members that the committee was still on track to select a new leader by the end of the year "but hopefully earlier." Dozens of external candidates applied for the position as well as all three current deputy chiefs. Chaffin sits and serves on several boards and committees including co-chairing the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Ethics Committee. |
