Conservative candidate Jason Kenney says Alberta stands to benefit from the Trans-Pacific Partnership as an exporting province.

"This is going to create tens of thousands of new jobs, perhaps even more, especially in places like Alberta, where we have so much in terms of export industry," said Kenney, a senior cabinet minister in the previous government who is running in the riding of Calgary Midnapore.

"This is the largest trade agreement in world history," Kenney added. "It will give us largely tariff-free access to 40 per cent of the world's economy."

Premier Rachel Notley has yet to speak about the trade deal's announcement but said last week she supports the plan in broad strokes and is cautiously optimistic it will be good for Alberta businesses.

Alberta Finance Minister Joe Ceci is expected to speak to reporters in Edmonton at 11 a.m. about the province's financial situation.

Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has said an NDP government in Ottawa would not feel bound by the terms of the TPP, which he has criticized as being negotiated in secret and particularly detrimental to Canada's auto-manufacturing and dairy farming industries.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau also criticized the lack of transparency during the TPP negotiations but said his party is a "pro-trade party" and would evaluate the details of the agreement on their merits.

Reduced tariffs on oil, beef

Shortly after news of the deal, which still needs to be ratified by member countries, was announced Monday morning, the Foreign Affairs Department released regional breakdowns of impacts the trade pact is expected to have on various parts of Canada.

Alberta would see Japanese tariffs on petroleum products of up to 7.9 per cent eliminated within 10 years, according to the release, while Vietnamese tariffs of up to 30 per cent would also be eliminated in the same timeframe.

Japanese tariffs on fresh and frozen beef would also be reduced to nine per cent within 15 years, down from their current level of 38.5 per cent, subject to "transitional volume-based safeguards," according to the release.

Big Bite: Why beef is soaring in price
Japan's tariffs of up to 50 per cent on processed beef, meanwhile, would be eliminated altogether within 15 years.

Alberta's exports to TPP nations totalled $112.8 billion last year, according to the federal government.
