One of two drivers accused of killing a pedestrian in northwest Calgary in 2013 was sentenced today to 90 days in jail and one year probation. A Calgary judge ruled Steven Vanasse will be able to serve his sentence on the weekends. Rachel Wong, 56, was struck as she attempted to cross the intersection of Sandstone Drive and Berkshire Boulevard. The sentence hadn't yet sunk in for Wong's family members, who said they were feeling "mixed emotions." "On one hand, it's good that this is finished. On the other hand, nothing is going to bring Rachel back," said her niece Flora Stephenson. Police said Wong was hit by a southbound vehicle and that two other vehicles drove around her as she lay on the ground before being struck by a second vehicle. Officials believe her body came to rest roughly 40 metres from the crosswalk. 2nd driver not found Vanasse left the scene after mowing down Wong, went to a store to inquire about a new windshield and then called 911 before turning himself in. Police have never been able to identify the second driver. Wong left behind a daughter, who received her Canadian citizenship this morning. This afternoon, she sat in the courtroom gallery to hear the sentence. Judge Heather Lamoureux acknowledged the "extreme trauma" suffered by Wong's daughter, who had to drop out of school and battles depression since her mother's death. As part of his sentence, the judge also told Vanasse he must donate 10 per cent of his 2015 net income to a charity of his victim's family's choice. "I hadn't expected that; I hope we can find something that can honour Rachel's memory," said Stephenson, "Hopefully something good can come out of this." |
