![]() Workers install the downtown bike lane network on May 1, 2017. Ian Kucerak /Postmedia Commuters will have to reconsider their routes as part of 102 Avenue is permanently closed to westbound traffic on Tuesday to make way for bikes. As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, 102 Avenue will be permanently closed to westbound traffic between 116 Street and 121 Street. The closure is part of the 102 Avenue Bike Route, which runs from 111 to 136 Street, connecting Edmonton’s downtown to the neighbourhoods of Oliver, Westmount and Glenora. During construction, which is expected to be complete in 2017, a parking ban on the south side of the street between 116 Street and 121 Street will be phased in. The phased parking ban will follow the construction until the project is complete, when the ban will be made permanent. While the north sidewalk on 102 Avenue may be closed in segments due to construction, no bus stops will be affected. Construction of a shared use path between 136 Street and Connaught Drive was already completed in 2016. These routes are part of a growing Downtown Bike Network that will see protected bike lanes between 96 Street and 116 Street that promised to get bicycle commuters within blocks of most major downtown destinations. |
