Heading into 2015’s final month, Calgary carries with it a homicide count second only to a city more than twice as populous.

Cops confirmed 30 times in 2015 someone’s fallen to foul play and several suspicious deaths are still being investigated, which could see Calgary hit a dubious record.

This year, Calgary is second to Toronto, which has seen only 17 more people slain.

Edmonton so far in 2015 has 23 homicides.

A former Calgary Police Service homicide boss says in his day, from the early 1990s to the early 2000s, the average was about 19.

“I know the police are working very hard on it — the pressure’s on them,” George Rocks said.

“They don’t like that kind of stat.

“We don’t need that kind of problem in this city.”

During his recent Calgary Sun editorial board meeting, Chief Roger Chaffin spoke to the strain his homicide detectives are under.

“They don’t get holidays very often or weekends off very often,” he said.

“The weekend we just had there were a whole bunch of people who thought they had the weekend off, then they didn’t,” he said of Nov. 14 and 15, which saw two more men gunned down.

“And you don’t just go in for a couple of hours — you go in for 48 hours straight.”

Curb gang violence and you’ll probably curb kills, Rocks said.

Within this year’s opening hours gunfire erupts at a house party in Killarney and several people go down — for good in the case of one young man.

Just a day later another young man is gunned down.

Gangsters past and present have their lives culled in an old conflict’s new twist.

Again and again domestic conflict cops come out alongside homicide, pleading the abused speak out before they suffer greater cost.

At the time this article was penned we were only days removed from police saying a young woman thought to have killed herself is now believed to have been killed by her boyfriend.

Calgary saw 30 homicides for all of 2014 and the last time we saw a number that high prior to that was the tail end of a near-decade of gang violence in 2008.

This year, about half of Calgary’s homicides were the result of guns and/or gangs.

“What’s the difference between homicide and attempted homicide or an aggravated assault? A centimetre? A millimetre?” Rocks said.

“It becomes a different stat.

“In some of those years where those stats were lower, (maybe) they were bad shots.”
