Edmonton public high schools will be full in four years, report says
Tony Chilton's daughter, Sarah, had her heart set on attending Harry Ainlay High School, but the family lives outside the school's boundaries. A new report says Edmonton's public high schools will be maxed out in four years. SHAUGHN BUTTS / POSTMEDIA NEWS Edmonton needs space for 6,000 more public high school students by 2025, said a Tuesday report to the Edmonton Public school board. Hardest hit are public high schools in Edmonton’s southeast, which are already at 99.7 per cent capacity, the report said. “The construction of new high school space is most impactful in remedying any future enrolment pressure the district may face,” administrators said in the report. As of September, there were 19,546 high school students enrolled in Edmonton Public Schools. Although the district has space for 22,202 high schoolers, pressure on south-side schools prompted Lillian Osborne and Harry Ainlay to close their boundaries this school year to Grade 10 students who lived outside the schools’ attendance areas. Projections show that as a glut of younger students age, existing public high schools will be full by 2021. By 2025, there will be 28,261 students in Grades 10-12, the district predicts. The district has two new high schools and one junior-senior high listed on its three-year construction wish list, but is dependent on the Alberta government for money and permission to build any new schools. In the short term, the report said the district may change school enrolment limits, close and adjust attendance boundaries, and establish new programs to make do with the space available. |
