Rachel Notley is applauded after being sworn in as Alberta's 17th premier in Edmonton on Sunday, May 24, 2015. JASON FRANSON / THE CANADIAN PRESS The premier’s office sent out notice late Monday that new members of cabinet will be sworn in at a live-streamed 11 a.m. ceremony at Government House in Edmonton. “We feel now is the time, as we work to implement a pretty robust cabinet agenda, that we should share the workload among our capable members,” said the premier’s spokeswoman, Cheryl Oates. Most cabinet ministers have two portfolios and up to four new members are expected to be appointed to lighten that burden. The cabinet started out with only 12 members last spring. It grew to 13 with the addition of Danielle Larivee, who took over Municipal Affairs and Service Alberta in October, when Deron Bilous was handed the new Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. Even with the additions, the new NDP cabinet is expected to be smaller than those under previous Progressive Conservative regimes. Currently, Finance Minister Joe Ceci, Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley and Human Services Minister Irfan Sabir are the only Calgary MLAs in cabinet, but at least one other Calgarian is expected to be appointed to the front benches. Including the premier, there are six cabinet members from Edmonton. No sitting ministers are expected to be bumped and no major shifts of responsibilities are expected.
