Four Calgary hikers who endured a frosty night in the mountains near Bragg Creek were plucked to safety Monday morning.
An Alpine Rescue helicopter crew spotted the four just before 9 a.m. and flew them to a nearby ranger station, where they were judged to be in good shape, said Const. Jennifer Brewer.
They were overdue from a Sunday day hike at Prairie Mountain near Elbow Falls.
“They’d gotten turned around and couldn’t find their way out,” said Brewer. “They stayed put, which was a good thing.”
Temperatures overnight dropped to below -10 C but some of the hikers had good outdoor skills, said Brewer.
The four ranged in age from 28 to 69 and it’s not known how well-equipped they were.
Several different search and rescue crews converged on the area, as did a city police HAWC helicopter.
The Prairie Mountain Trail is a popular day hike that winds through rocky, heavily timbered slopes.
The four hikers left their home in Calgary around 11 a.m. and were expected to return from their day trip around 4 p.m. When they didn’t return, family members went to the hiking trail and found the hikers’ vehicle undisturbed. Police were called around 11:30 p.m.
