Guns, drugs, illegal poultry: A busy, sometimes bizarre, year at border crossings

On December 6, 2015, CBSA detector dog Kodiak intercepted a large quantity of prohibited and undeclared food and animal products found in the suitcase of a traveller coming in from Egypt including 9.55 kg whole raw duck, 6.6 kg whole raw chicken, 3.33 kg pastrami, 1.77 kg homemade butter, 92.5 grams miscellaneous seeds (unpackaged) and 750 grams of milk. From seizing drugs, weapons and undeclared meat, to helping police arrest fugitives, Canada Border Services Agency officers in Calgary and at southern Alberta land crossings had a very busy year in 2015.

“Weapons, drugs, and child pornography – many of us do not even realize the serious nature of the contraband smugglers are attempting to bring into Calgary, and that is largely because of the diligence and effectiveness of our CBSA officers in stopping it at the border,” said Kim Scoville, CBSA’s regional director general for the prairie region, in a statement.

Southern Alberta officers seized 51 undeclared firearms, the largest annual total since 2012, including two handguns at the Carway crossing hidden under a bed in a travel trailer.

Officers also made 184 drug seizures in Calgary and 60 at the southern Alberta border crossings with the help of recently retired detector dog Trooper and new detector dog Comet, who joined the force in December.

In Calgary, officers intercepted a package from Albania of a hollowed-out book containing six bottles of Rivotril, a drug used to control seizures, which was handed over to Saskatoon police investigators, who then charged the importer. Officers also discovered 25 grams of cocaine concealed inside a porcelain clown statue.

At the Wild Horse border crossing, a New York man was arrested after officers found 4.5 grams of suspected marijuana hidden in a potato-chip can that had been modified with a false bottom.

But CBSA seized more than drugs and weapons.

Detector dog Kodiak helped sniff out packages of undeclared food from a traveller coming in from Egypt, who was fined $650. In the passenger’s suitcase, officers uncovered 9.55 kilograms of whole raw duck, 6.6 kilograms of whole raw chicken, 3.33 kilograms of pastrami, 1.77 kilograms of homemade butter, 92.5 grams of miscellaneous seeds, and 750 grams of milk.

In addition, CBSA officers prevented offenders from entering the country and helped police services with arresting fugitives.

Border officers at the Calgary International Airport arrested Anshul Edison Fernando, wanted for fraud and theft over $5,000 in connection with a multi-million-dollar fraud ring.

They also intercepted an alleged child-abductor, who was the subject of a Canada-wide arrest warrant, and her nine-year-old stepson flying in from South America. The child was reunited with his biological mother and the woman was turned over to city police.

At the Chief Mountain border crossing, officers refused entry to an American man who had been recently convicted of domestic battery and driving under the influence. In Coutts, officers sent a man to the Mounties after he failed a breathalyzer test.
