'Everyone owes thanks': Driver praised after full school bus struck by passing SUV
Mounties are crediting a bus driver with keeping a school bus full of children safe after the vehicle was struck by an SUV near Priddis on Tuesday morning.

Officers were called around 8 a.m. to Highway 22 to respond to a collision involving a Foothills School Division bus and an SUV.

Police say the school bus carrying more than a dozen children was heading east on the single-lane highway toward 240 Street West.

As the bus started to make a left hand turn, an SUV, also heading east, moved into the westbound lane to try to overtake a line of traffic slowing down for the bus.

The SUV ended up crashing into the side of the turning bus in the westbound lane.

Const. Steven Sigvaldason with the Turner Valley RCMP said the SUV driver was unaware the bus was turning left and struck the vehicle, sending it into a ditch.

“It was in danger of rolling on the passenger side. But the driver did a good job keeping it on its wheels,” Sigvaldason said, adding all 13 of the children on board were unharmed in the crash.

“Everyone owes thanks to that bus driver.”

The driver of the SUV has been charged with attempting to overtake when unsafe, under the Use of the Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation.
