Mayor Naheed Nenshi is encouraging Calgarians not to use Uber until insurance and regulatory issues are sorted. And bylaw officials say the company is operating illegally in the city and drivers could face $1,500 fines. “We are actively enforcing that,” said Marc Halat, manager of compliance services for the city’s Bylaw Department. “We have a complement of officers that are going to address this that justifies the need that’s out there. “I’m confident we will address it accordingly.” Already in several Canadian cities, including Edmonton, Uber — a popular ride sharing app that connects drivers with people needing a lift — launched in Calgary on Thursday, despite objections from officials in the city’s transportation department. In a written statement, Nenshi encouraged Calgarians to avoid using the service until insurance issues are sorted. “Uber has shown itself to be flexible in different regulatory environments around the world, it would be helpful for everyone if they demonstrate that same flexibility here in Calgary,” it read. “I strongly suggest that you don’t drive for Uber and that you don’t use Uber until the insurance and regulatory issues are sorted out. “If you drive for Uber, you should be aware that you are breaking the law.” Nenshi said he is open to working with the company to craft appropriate legislation. City officials contend private insurance may not be considered valid if drivers are being paid. Uber spokesman Xavier Van Chau has said the company will pay the fines of any drivers ticketed, and will also offer legal support if needed. City council is set to discuss the issue of ride sharing companies at the Nov. 16 meeting, and Halat said officials will bring forward recommendations then. dave.dormer@sunmedia.ca On Twitter: @SUNDaveDormer
