Mayor Don Iveson’s trip to China in the new year could bring a pay off for the city. On a couple of fronts. Waste management and aviation. One of our stops is actually a ground breaking for our first project in China with Waste Re-Solutions and our Chinese joint venture partner there,” Iveson boasted in his annual year end interview. “We’re actually putting a significant waste management project in the ground there in a smaller city of about 80,000 but it represents our first deal. Now we’re a going concern over there so we’ll be meeting with officials from that community.” “This is our foot hold” The mayor said the timing is right in the wake of the climate change talks that took place at the UN summit in Paris. He said carbon gets a lot of attention, however methane, from rotting garbage, is a problem too. “For countries and cities that want to make a tangible difference, the first thing you can do is change your waste practices to reduce the amount of methane you produce. Or at least capture it, and burn it and turn it into electricity . But we have those solutions, we’re actually really good at all of that so all of the sudden we just became that much more relevant to problem solving in cities.” The other file the city wants to forward is with the airports authority. “We’re working closely with the International Airport to grow the cargo business Based on our preliminary success with this first Air China cargo flight. There’s always the long term desire to have direct passenger flights to Asia as well so that’s part of the meetings we’ll have there, so air connectivity for both people and cargo is a big focus to why we’re going over there.” The initial cargo connection was launched in early September. |
