Despite last year’s Snowtember wallop, Calgary’s snow-and-ice control costs dropped significantly over the past dozen months thanks to milder weather and drier conditions.

The city shelled out $36.8 million on snow and ice control between August 2014 to August 2015, according to a new municipal report, down from the $51 million spent over the same period a year prior.

The 28 per cent drop in spending was attributed to reduced snowfall in February, March and April.

Calgary was on the receiving end of 140 centimetres of snowfall over the past winter season — which is about average — but roughly 20 per cent of it came during an unexpected blizzard in September 2014.

In 2013-14, Calgary was hit with nearly 180 centimetres of snow.

Councillors will receive the update on the municipal snow and ice program when the report is submitted for review at Wednesday’s meeting of the transportation and transit committee.

The city’s snow and ice program aims to reduce public hazards related to wintry weather and provide “reasonable and reliable” mobility on municipal roads, sidewalks, public transit and pathways.

The new report says that 43 per cent of the snow-and-ice control budget went to labour costs, while 35 per cent was spent on equipment and 20 per cent on materials.

Over the past year, the city’s roads department applied 32 per cent less salt and chloride than the previous season.

The report notes that the department is seeking significant investments in the future. It identifies $26 million in required upgrades to its snow and ice control material storage facilities as well as $52 million to improve its snow storage sites.
