One man is dead and more than 298 crashes were reported after a dangerous day on roads in the Calgary area Friday.

Police confirmed a male was dead following a crash between a semi and a car on Peigan Trail at 52nd Street S.E. during the evening rush hour.

The man, who was driving the car, was declared dead at the scene. EMS said no resuscitation was attempted.

The male driver of the truck was unhurt. No one else was inside the vehicles, and police say their investigation is ongoing.

From 6 a.m. to just before 9 p.m., 38 car accidents caused injuries. No one was hurt in another 260 crashes during that time.

Earlier, four people were injured following two separate highway crashes outside the city. One of them, a senior, was airlifted to hospital in serious condition.

Police and paramedics were called to Highway 567 at Range Road 284 just east of Airdrie around 12:30 p.m. to respond to a collision between two vehicles.

RCMP believe a Chevrolet Avalanche was attempting to turn north on Range Road 284 when it was struck from behind by a Jeep Wrangler.

The 68-year-old male driver of a Jeep was flown by STARS air ambulance to Foothills Hospital in serious, potentially life-threatening condition with possible internal injuries.

The 47-year-old female driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Peter Lougheed Centre by ground ambulance in stable non-life threatening condition with minor injuries.

Highway 567 was closed and traffic was rerouted for about two hours but has since reopened.

Earlier in the day, around 11:10 a.m., emergency workers responded to a crash between a semi and a car at Highway 1A and Range Road 284 just west of Chestermere.

A woman in her 40s had to be extricated from her “significantly damaged vehicle,” and was transported to Foothills Hospital in stable, non-life threatening condition with a serious leg injury, said EMS.

A man in his 30s who was travelling in the semi was also taken to Foothills Hospital in stable, non-life threatening condition.
