Chestermere gets $9M boost in disaster funds for summer flood damage

(Justin Pennell/CBC) The province is making about $9 million available to help residents of Chestermere and Langdon whose homes were damaged in a severe rainstorm earlier this year.The July 12 storm damaged nearly 300 properties. The Disaster Recovery Program (DRP) funds will also go toward fixing damage to municipal infrastructure, such as public parks. "The DRP is intended to help eligible applicants with repairs to property that are not covered by insurance, and covers the restoration of essential property back to basic, pre-disaster condition," the province said in a release. Damage caused solely by sewer backup will not be covered, but in cases where overland flooding also occurred, assistance might be available, the province says. "By providing disaster relief to residents whose homes were damaged by the July flood, it's my hope we can relieve some of the anxiety and financial stress caused by the storm," said Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee. The province is setting up temporary registration centres early next year. The centre in Rocky View County will be open on Jan.14 and the centre in Chestermere will be open Jan.15-16. Applicants should bring: • Government-issued ID. • A letter from their insurance company indicating any insurance coverage. • A list of damaged and/or replaced items. • A record of time spent cleaning up. • Pictures of damaged and discarded property, including interior and exterior views. • Receipts for clean-up, repairs and replacement of damaged items. |
